Modernism by jerry kearns

Founded in 1979, Modernism has since presented more than 300 exhibitions, both historical and contemporary, in media ranging from painting to photography, sculpture to performance, by an international roster of artists.
Throughout its 27 years, owner Martin Muller has striven to keep the gallery's challenging, museum quality program at the forefront of the art world.
Early landmarks included being the first gallery to show Andy Warhol in the Bay Area (1982), and holding the first exhibition on the West Coast (in a gallery or museum) of the Russian Avant-Garde 1910-1930 (1980, 17 more retrospectives have since been mounted).
In the 1990s Modernism highlighted its strong abstract program with the exhibition of "Four Abstract Classicists" (1993), a recreation of the show presented by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1959, while at the same time introducing America to the confrontational, and ofttimes disturbing, conceptual works of Austrian born artist Gottfried Helnwein (1992).
Recent years have seen the 25th anniversary of the gallery (2004), and with it many more firsts, including the first major exhibition of the works of Le Corbusier on the West Coast(2003), and just last year, the first major retrospective in the U.S. of the paintings, drawing, collages, and photographs of Erwin Blumenfeld (2006).
In addition to the milestones above, Modernism prides itself on the scope of its program:
Historical exhibitions encompass areas including Dada, Cubism, Surrealism, Vorticism, German Expressionism, and foremost, the Russian Avant-Garde 1910-1930.

Media and culture

Magazines are edited by hand and alternative covers need to be developed for the more conservative audience. Nudity is a not allowed in any form. The Islamic culture is very conservative and showing any skin other than the face, hands or feet can be considered sexually arousing, therefore inappropriate for public display. Different countries vary, Riyadh in Saudi being the most conservative and Dubai in UAE the most liberal. In Saudi Arabia you can't show any skin (other than the mentioned body parts) outdoors, while in Dubai the same beauty product ads are running as in Europe.Movie ads need to be retouched to comply with the strict cultural expectations. Legs, clevage and even shoulders need to be covered. This not only applies to women, but to man as well. Even cartoon characters need to be dressed up.

intrerpellation

According to Christian Metz, the interpellation is when a viewer emphasizes more on the ideology and the character than the fiction side of the picture. For this case, there is the passive and immobile viewer that are qualified as being viewers that has nothing to do with the deep and the artistic meaning of a picture, and who are identifying themselves with ideal subject. We can also include the semiotic in the interpellation part to talk about the fact that image can be understood as words and text with codes and deep meanings. However, interpellation comes from, in other words, the viewers’ unconscious which is inaccessible by our logical selves. The unconscious is controlling our way of thinking and viewing thinks and especially with spectatorship view; however, this unconscious gives always us a certain motivation and inspiration.

WHAT DO YOU SEE WHEN YOU LOOK CLOSELY AT THE PICTURE DURING ONE MINUTE ?

Oppositional picture

The concept of child soldiers and violence remains for me a topic of provocation and I don’t accept it. This topic of child soldiers goes against my ethical and moral values. Children should be given the right to live their childhood far from violence and war, they need attention and affection from the adult world rather than being considered tools of war and crimes.

Negociated picture

This picture represents for me a topic of debate as I struggle to accept the issue of homosexuality, which is becoming an open issue. On one hand, I understand the rights of homosexual to freely express their love and sexual orientation. However, on the other hand as a Moroccan in a Muslim country this issue still remains a taboo unaccepted by society and religion.

ATTENTION OF ECONOMICS

looking to a picture can differentiate from one meaning to another. when you can see to a picure you see to to the image that is in front to your eyes : colours and shapes, which is means that you are looking at the picture in itself. But sometimes the picture can have deep meaning behinds the colours and the shape , and in that case we look trought the picture and not atit because we are trying to understand the message that the picture is sending.

So can you be able to differentiate between those two people? where is the "look trought" and the "look at" image , and what are the causes that pushe you to make your choice ?

Movement

there is no movement in the first picture, but if you see deeply in it you can distinguish a particular illusionary movement due to the shape and the colour that are in the picture . in the second one the movement are clearly represented in different dimensions and angles. so can we consider a movement on a specific picture as a real one , if it really exist or a if it just a visual illusion?

Colours and universes

The more things you see , the more ideas you have !!!

Recently i made this picture that looks like a mosaic that regroups different elements and differents cololors. Thanks to those pictures i realized how much my culture was full of colors , forms, depth and movement. A culture rich of colors is a culture full of history , and thanks to pictures and images we can share our culture with others and explain them our way of living, customs and wealth.
