Negociated picture

This picture represents for me a topic of debate as I struggle to accept the issue of homosexuality, which is becoming an open issue. On one hand, I understand the rights of homosexual to freely express their love and sexual orientation. However, on the other hand as a Moroccan in a Muslim country this issue still remains a taboo unaccepted by society and religion.

Your observation is an excellent demonstration of what happens when ideologies clash and mix and negotiation between ways of looking occurs. Not a 'common sense' image yet in any part of the world!

In a negotiated image, we see the role played by people to challenge the meaning or cultural assumption used in the message conveyed by the image. In this case it is the way homosexuality is perceived by the society and the cultural assumptions that people have when they see two gays or lesbians kissing.

I guess calling this picture as a negotiated picture in the Moroccan Context wouldn't be mistaking. I speak in a very objective perspective on that issue and therefore I would like to argue that this picture is not a negociated but rather a oppositional picture in our culture. As you (lamia) have claimed in your blog entry we are a Muslim and conservator country where homosexuality although it exists has no place in our society. You might say that sexuality can be explained a natural phenomenon and that ignoring their right is not fair and I would then answer that by saying that homosexuality shocks the Moroccan society and its existence could and contribute to the unstability of our society. I hope you understand what I mean.
